How to Switch Salon Suites Without Losing Clients

How to switch salon suites without losing clients: check your lease, a week-by-week moving plan, what to text clients and every listing to update on move day.

You can switch salon suites without losing clients if you plan the move around your lease, tell clients personally before you post it, and update every place your address appears on the day you move. Clients book with you, not with the building, so the risk is clients who can't find you, not clients who don't want to follow. Start about two months out.

Start with your current lease

Many salon suite leases run a year, and some renew on their own unless you give notice. Before you tour anywhere, find these four things in your agreement:

  • End date. Plan your first week in the new suite for the week after it.
  • Notice period. How many days' written notice you owe, and where it has to go.
  • Auto-renewal. Whether the lease rolls over if you miss the notice window.
  • Early exit. What you owe if you leave before the end date, and whether you can sublease.

If the dates don't line up, ask the new building whether it can hold a suite for a later start. A week or two of overlap usually costs less than a gap with no place to work.

A week-by-week plan for the move

8 to 10 weeks before

  • Read your current lease: end date, notice period, auto-renewal, and what you owe if you leave early.
  • Write down what you own in the suite and what belongs to the building.
  • Tour two or three buildings and ask each the same questions (list below).

6 weeks before

  • Give written notice the way your lease asks for it, and keep a copy.
  • Sign your new lease and confirm your move-in date and key code.
  • Check licensing: your personal license goes with you, but confirm with Michigan LARA whether your new suite needs its own establishment license.

4 weeks before

  • Tell your regular clients in person or by text, one at a time, before you post anything.
  • Add the new address to your booking app for appointments after your move date.
  • Order new cards and anything with your old address on it.

2 weeks before

  • Post the move on Instagram and Facebook, with the new address and the first day you take bookings there.
  • Send one text or email to every client in your book, not just the regulars.
  • Book movers or a friend with a truck for anything heavy you own.

Move week

  • Update your Google Business Profile address the day you move, and your website, Yelp, Booksy, Vagaro, GlossGenius or whatever you use.
  • Leave your old suite clean and photograph it for your deposit.
  • Put a sign or a note with your new address where the old building allows it.

First month

  • Text clients the day before their first visit with parking and door directions for the new building.
  • Ask happy clients for a Google review at the new address.
  • Watch for anyone who has not rebooked and reach out personally.

How to tell clients you're moving suites

Tell your regulars yourself before they see it online. A short, personal message works better than a long announcement. For example:

“Hi Dana, I wanted you to hear it from me first: I'm moving to a new suite on [date]. Same me, same services, new address: [address]. Your next appointment is already booked there. Can't wait to show you the space!”

Then post it on social media and send one message to your whole book. Repeat the new address and your first day there in each one. The day before each client's first visit, send directions: which entrance, where to park, and your suite number.

Update every place your address lives

  • Google Business Profile (this is the one most clients use to find you)
  • Your booking app and any confirmation or reminder texts
  • Instagram, Facebook and TikTok bios
  • Your website, Yelp and any directory listings
  • Business cards, aftercare cards and product labels
  • Your Michigan license records, if your address is on file with LARA

What to ask the new building before you sign

  • What comes in the suite for my specialty, and what will I have to buy?
  • Are utilities, Wi-Fi and laundry included?
  • How are the walls built, and can the suite be soundproofed?
  • Can I get in at any hour, and what security is there?
  • Can I share the suite with another pro, and is there a charge?
  • Will my name be on the door?
  • Is there a move-in offer for pros switching from another suite?

Switching to Cosmo Salon Studios

If you're moving within Metro Detroit or Southeast Michigan, Cosmo's Suite to Suite offer gives you 4 weeks free on a new lease at every location, and some locations offer more on select suites. Your suite is equipped for your specialty and designer-finished before you arrive, so moving day is about your tools and your products, not furniture.

Plan your move

Walk through a suite before you give notice, so you know exactly where you're going. Book your private tour, and bring your lease dates so we can help you line up the move.

Common Questions

Salon suite questions, answered

How do I switch salon suites without losing clients?
Plan the move around your lease, tell regular clients personally before you post it, give everyone the new address and first day, and update your booking app, Google Business Profile and listings on move day. Then follow up with anyone who has not rebooked in the first month.
How far ahead should I plan a salon suite move?
About two months. That leaves time to read your lease, tour new buildings, give written notice on time and tell clients at least four weeks before you move.
Can I leave my salon suite lease early?
It depends on your agreement. Check the early-exit terms, what you would owe and whether you can sublease, and ask your new building whether it can hold a suite for a later start.
Do I need a new license if I move salon suites in Michigan?
Your personal Michigan license goes with you. The suite has to meet the rules for a licensed establishment, so confirm with Michigan LARA whether your new suite needs its own establishment license before you open.
What should I text clients when I move suites?
Keep it short and personal: tell them you are moving, the date, the new address and that their next appointment is already booked there. Send directions to the new suite the day before their first visit.
Does Cosmo Salon Studios offer anything for pros switching suites?
Yes. Suite to Suite gives you 4 weeks free on a new lease at every Cosmo location when you move from another salon suite, and some locations offer more on select suites.
